I am seeing a lot of misinformation about #Assessment & #Evaluation. #GrowingSuccess is an incredibly flexible policy that has huge room for Teacher Professional Judgement & how students show learning through conversations, observations & products http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/policyfunding/growSuccess.pdf #OntEd
1) The primary purpose of assessment and evaluation is to improve student learning.
2) Evaluation is to be based off of OVERALL EXPECTATIONS. No need to feel like you need to evaluate every single specific expectation
3) there are lots of amazing tools we can utilize online to do Assessment For, As and Of Learning.
4) the final grade’s 30% is based on a final evaluation which DOESN’T HAVE TO BE AN EXAM! It can be, but doesn’t have to be.
5) here is the equity piece, those who can’t access our course like they did before? Guess what growing success says? A students grade should reflect the most consistent level of achievement throughout the course. 90’s before this pandemic? Use your professional judgment.
6) What students are doing now isn’t “homework” when business was usual. Yes they are doing work at home. “Homework” isn’t meant to be evaluated, but by this definition below what students will be doing now isn’t “homework”. See next tweet.
6 b) assignment for evaluation is clearly defined here and those items can be done at home under these circumstances. (Yes I know someone is going to tweet me and say how do we stop cheating or their parents doing the work).
7) This isn’t business as usual. We are in a pandemic. The government announcement isn’t super detailed because we have these policies in place and as educators we use our professional judgement to support the learners we know best. We don’t want that freedom taken away #OntEd
Update: our director has added further clarification on assessment here. https://www.tdsb.on.ca/News/Article-Details/ArtMID/474/ArticleID/1446/Continuation-of-Learning-in-the-TDSB----Message-from-the-Director speaking to secondary we are going with “most consistent mark”. The pandemic will cause students to not be able to demonstrate learning. We are in line with growing success.
