My brother is homeless and has been in the Schwarz Assessment Facility for the Homeless up until last night, when he reported that he had lost sense of smell & taste. The shelter then required that he be taken to the hospital. 2/?

After being taken to Metropolitan Hospital, he was discharged & sent back to the shelter. This morning a doctor told him he likely has a mild case of #COVID19, he would be sent to another hospital for testing, & isolated him waiting for the ambulance. 3/?

My brother was taken to Lincoln Hospital, givena nasal swab test for #COVID19, and has to wait 7 days for the results. He presented the hospital with a letter that the shelter provided, and this is where things get even messier...4/?

The shelter's letter stated that he could not go back there and had to be sent to a Department of Homeless Services (DHS) Quarranti lne Facility. It did not identify a specific location. Hospital staff were completely unaware of how to proceed. 5/? #COVID19Homeless

After being sent in multiple circles to different departments (multiple times), he was sent back to the the emergency area and spoke with a second social worker, only to be told that a form had to be faxed to the DHS and...6/?

...he may not know where he'll be sent *for more than a day*. In the meantime, since he has no place to go, he's been given instructions to wait in the waiting area (no blanket or anything) until he gets an update. A cop has been assigned to watch him. 7/?

It goes without saying this is unacceptable way to handle homeless, our most vulnerable, especially from public health standpoint to avoid spread of #COVID19. It's inexcusable & a serious flaw in managing #COVID19 crisis. #NY & @NYGovCuomo have to address this immediately. 8/-

Update to this thread:
At 5 am, by which point he had a fever and rigors, my brother was taken out of the waiting area and #NY DHS had him transported via taxi to a hotel being used for #COVID19 homeless quarantine purposes. 9/?
