How have I not seen this before? It so needs to be live tweeted. https://archive.org/details/UNIX1985">https://archive.org/details/U...
Why all the excitement about UNIX? And will UNIX become the next MS-DOS?
Shortly after showing troff scrolling on the screen: The shell structure is friendly, allowing even first time users to do complex tasks.
An alternative to a multi-user environment is local area networks. I think it is important to contrast that with a multi-user system. At some time that will be a viable alternative. Right now you don& #39;t have a hard standard network... but I think that is somethig to watch for..
"As for the future of UNIX, he (Bill Joy) says its open source code, versatility and ability to work on a variety of machines means it will be popular with engineers and scientists for some time to come."

1985 is the earliest reference to "open source" that I& #39;ve seen.
"But will UNIX ever make it big in the business market? Bill Joy doubts it. He says that what it needs is something big like Lotus 123. Until then he& #39;s not very hopeful."
"We hear about Xenix, UNIX, you call your thing HP-UX, ... why are there so many versions of UNIX?"

"The proliferation of names besides UNIX is due to AT&T& #39;s requirement that you not call it UNIX."
"I think that everybody improves the recipe they get from grandma, or in this case & #39;Ma& #39;, ..."
"Do we lose anything in the implementation? Is this the same UNIX?"

"The only thing we left out was the hard disk."
"There are incompatible UNIX dialects galore. UNIX is a user-hostile operating system, dramatically short on software."
Atari also unveiled its new CDROM storage system. A disk can hold 500 megabytes and will sell for $500.
I left out lots of stuff that was more substantive. Go watch it to get your geek on.
