If you’re a TV writer- and if I were a betting woman- here’s what I’d be working on right now:
-animation
-things set in the past
-things set in the future (NOT dystopia; think Star Trek)
-gentle multi-cams
Setting aside production constraints, anything written now meant to take place in the “normal world” will feel like sci-fi by the time it comes out. We do not know what the world will look like in two weeks, much less a year.
I have a feeling there will be limited appetite for dystopian fiction and none for coronavirus related content. Musicals, screwball comedies, and escapist fantasies were popular during the Great Depression. People will want distraction and comfort food.
Keep it low budget, keep your scope small, keep it fun and familiar.
By the way they’re only going to make, like, one quarantine romantic comedy and unless you’re, like, Issa Rae, you will not be the one to write it.
I’m basing this entirely off of entertainment trends throughout the 20th century and a strong hunch, so take it with a grain of salt.
