This is great news. Over the last 2 weeks the @NYCVetsAlliance team has found out how many veterans are food insecure. It has been & remains the TOP request for help during #COVID19. 1/ https://twitter.com/riesinthewild/status/1245837771505205248
Food insecurity is a New York problem. It is also an American problem. For all families, not only veterans & military families. @NYCVetsAlliance has received requests for food & help from Gold Star Families also. 2/
Two weeks ago it was marginally possible to order online groceries. After the stay-at-home order, it's become almost impossible to order grocery delivery for families in need. It's been a journey for the @NYCVetsAlliance team to locate & work with food pantries & orgs. 3/
Important to know that NYC offers food assistance via this link: http://bit.ly/nycfooddelivery  - so grateful to live America's most compassionate big city. 4/
Ever grateful for @godslovenyc who deliver food to disabled & chronically ill homebound New Yorkers. Much appreciate being able to reach out to them for help with folks in need. 5/
Greatly appreciate the amazing team of @InvisHandsHQ who are getting food deliveries to elderly & folks in need. Info here: http://invisiblehandsdeliver.com/  6/
It has been wonderful that NYC's children have been getting 3 free meals per day. And now that is expanded to adults who need it. You can text FOOD to 877877 to find the location nearest you. 7/
A new app to help folks find food resources near them is from @unitedwaynyc: https://www.plentifulapp.com/  8/
But seriously the last 2 weeks has been a lesson in food deserts (esp in Bronx & Brooklyn) & areas where online services don't even deliver ever. Even availability of quality food on services like Seamless. NY'ers are hungry out there w/ very limited options. 9/
This evening @NYCVetsAlliance wanted to get food to a veteran family of 9 who are struggling. Ended up ordering them dinner from local kosher deli. But no grocery delivery is available for them for the foreseeable future bc services are so jammed up. 10/
If you need help, please ask at https://bit.ly/vetshelp_covid19 - you're in good company. And some great folks will do whatever they can to help. 11/
The point of this thread is to comment about how astonishing this has been. I knew food insecurity was very real in NYC & for veterans & military. But the flood of requests for food help to @NYCVetsAlliance during #COVID19 has been truly stunning to me. 12/
Asking for folks to please share food resource info (all on this thread) & please support all of these orgs who are helping to address this profound immediate need. Thanks for listening. 13/13
