Today would have been the start of the 2020 Kobuk 440, and last night would have been the community potluck. It’s unusually quiet out on the ice for this time of year as Kotzebue responds to COVID-19 concerns with the rest of the world. Photo by Hannah Atkinson.

also. hi. my name is tiffany ( @wowseagull ) and i’m the “wizard of oz” for the kobuk 440 twitter. i’m still logged in on my phone and they can’t stop me! just kidding, i got permission to introduce myself from the 440 president. but i just wanted to say a few things. a thread:

first, when i was asked to run the twitter last year, i did not expect such a response. i had so much fun with it and i’m glad i had the go-ahead to be silly and real. ur energy was so infectious! so, thank you for caring about the race and being silly with us!

second, other social media stars included: billy, a public health nurse who was so busy after 440 week we never got to introduce her properly. anyone who knows her, knows she’s the kindest, most generous soul and quick to laugh. her greatest hits: the tweets about animal speeds

fallon was another social media star on facebook, uploading pictures and getting official updates out there. she is an active and ambitious person who is a fixture in community volunteer efforts. if you saw the quality visuals you needed from facebook, you have her to thank!

we also had so many pictures, videos, live broadcasts, and even drone footage from community members including harley, robin, maija and @Apayauq1 ... and so many more!

440 president hannah atkinson, amid all her other duties, also created many of the helpful graphics and maps that circulated social media. another very hardworking and friendly volunteer, sarahi, took on many aspects of the buy-a-mike program.

we had a special contribution from myles, who made some awesome language lessons related to dog mushing, bite-sized and perfect for social media!

inevitably i have left some people out. but there are so many people who went into just the social media aspect of the race. anyone who had anything to don with the race all experienced this within a week:
