A quick
about healthcare systems during and after a crisis.
After 9/11 we said we would never forget.
Yet, many did.
We said we would take care of our first responders.
But we did not.
We made dying heroes fight for what we had promised them. https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/06/how-lawmakers-protected-and-failed-9-11-first-responders.html

Instead of doing what was promised, what is right, and what is moral. Many law makers had to be publicly shamed for failing 9/11 heroes in their hour of need. Too many on both sides of the aisle didnât even show up to look these people in the face. https://nypost.com/2019/06/11/jon-stewart-shames-lawmakers-for-not-showing-up-to-9-11-victims-fund-hearing/
Ultimately after relentless public shaming legislation was finally passed to fund the 9/11 victims healthcare fund despite two awful Republicans failed the men and women who ran toward the burning twin towers to save American lives on that horrifying day. https://www.newsweek.com/despite-temporary-republican-roadblocks-congress-renews-9-11-victims-fund-1450712
@SenGillibrand and many others put a lot of time and effort into making sure America did what was right and lived up to its promises for 9/11 first responders, despite the appalling resistance from the @GOP https://www.politico.com/states/new-york/albany/story/2019/07/17/gillibrand-gop-playing-political-games-after-attempt-to-permanently-fund-9-11-victims-fund-blocked-1107695
You may be wondering why I bring up one American tragedy in the midsts of another.
I do this now because 2 days ago America lost more lives to #COVIDăŒ19 than we lost on 9/11, and unfortunately we will be losing so many more in the weeks to come. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2020/03/31/coronavirus-updates-amazon-strike-furloughs-new-test-las-vegas-homeless/5088976002/

First responders, doctors, nurses, hospital support staff, are all at a much higher risk of being infected with #COVIDăŒ19 than most of us, because they are frequently exposed to people who have it. https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/covid-19-hits-doctors-nurses-emts-threatening-health-system/2020/03/17/f21147e8-67aa-11ea-b313-df458622c2cc_story.html
At the same time our healthcare workers are not being provided adequate and also required PPE to protect their health during this crisis, further endangering not only their lives, but the lives of their families as well. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/19/health/coronavirus-masks-shortage.html
As these heroes risk their lives, & the lives of their loved ones without the appropriate personal protective gear, instead of receiving needed support, theyâre receiving a pink slip. Further reducing the number of medical professionals during this crisis. https://fortune.com/2020/03/31/coronavirus-shortages-hospitals-doctors-fired-face-masks-ppe/
Some healthcare professionals have already died due to #COVIDăŒ19, and it is likely many more will.

and worldwide. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/927976

Furthermore, while we do not yet fully understand the long term health consequences for #COVIDăŒ19 survivors, there is evidence survivors may suffer debilitating and life long consequences of this virus. https://www.france24.com/en/20200402-for-some-survivors-coronavirus-complications-can-last-a-lifetime
Also, while many of us are stressed depressed and anxiety ridden due to #COVIDăŒ19 the people who risk their lives to get us through this are facing a level of emotional duress that few who havenât been on a battlefield can even begin to comprehend. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/27/coronavirus-pandemic-could-inflict-long-lasting-emotional-trauma-ptsd.html
Which brings me to the purpose of this thread:
As you sit at home wondering how you can help, please consider contacting your state representatives to let them know the heroes of #COVIDăŒ19 should not be allowed to be forgotten. These people and their families will need support.
