hmm so people.... like comedy theatre eh? gee gosh I do hope people with money and power are paying AtTenTion https://twitter.com/NationalTheatre/status/1245814487669710848
and lemme tell you, even before pandemic, how much funding do you think there is for theatre projects that just want to make people feel good? lol yeah ok you guys know this song
People like to believe "comedy things" are Commercial and therefore shouldn't be funded, as if making audience feel happy isn't a crucial remit of the arts. It's very easy and boring to fall into the trap of Hard Plays Are Cleverer than Fun Plays. They're not.
And I should know, I've never written a hard play, and I'm a genius
What I know is that a lot of people say to me "oh theatre! oh I SHOULD go to the theatre more" like "I SHOULD eat more vegetables". theatre is often a chore. Why should people go outside in the dark and pay 50 quid and not watch lovely Netflix instead for a fucking chore?
anyway all this is pretty pointless when theatre is Over now in the new world, but funny theatre is the theatre gateway drug, and is the best and deserves more than it gets
