For the @NTLive crowd, I saw the original London/Broadway cast of One Man, Two Guvnors three times: opening night on Broadway, the night after @JKCorden won the Tony, and the closing performance on Broadway. This thread will focus on that final performance.
It was easily the most raucous, no-holds-barred closing I've ever attended. The show went into overdrive when Corden asked for a sandwich and we realized the audience had come prepared. Pranks, break-ups, partial nudity, and utter and delicious chaos ensued...
There were maybe six or seven sandwiches, plus a takeaway tray of fries and a "posh bag" (Corden's words) of fish and chips. While in the midst of this mass hilarity, Corden who was also seriously touched, took the entire stack and handed them off to someone in the wings.
Then came an impromptu sandwich parade, with members of the company entering one by one, taking a bite of the food, and leaving. Corden took the show back to the previous line and started again admonishing the audience that it was better for them if this had never happened.
They were utterly fearless with the comedy bits, leading to many breakups in scenes: kissing, licking, spanking, and sight gags that seemed to emerge off the cuff. Lots of ad-libs, mad libs, and business that I'd never seen before.
At the end of act one @Oliverchris re-emerged and sprayed Corden in the face with the extinguisher. In the food scene, Corden's wine glass was filled to the brim with real wine, he drank the whole thing, and proceeded to fling a pitcher of water in Oliver's face.
When @CaptainPooper revealed she was a girl, she tore open her shirt upstage & from we could tell actually flashed the men. Corden went beet red, froze, and clasped his hand to his face for a solid minute; the seemingly unflappable Fred Ridgeway, well, flapped. Utter pandemonium.
Oliver also had Corden's face on both sides of his underwear, and then Corden pantsed him. It was delirious, outrageous, and the most possible fun one could have at that mad little show. The show ran almost three delightful hours that afternoon.
I'm so glad we got to have that brazen laugh-fest on Broadway (though the run was limited, which was unfortunate). Grateful for the original London cast album, preserving @grantolding's divine and clever Tony-nominated score, and this @NTLive broadcast.
