I am very skeptical of the NBA team thought process that mental makeup/personality should be a big factor in whether you draft someone
NBA teams when scouting tend to be drawn towards players who are gym rats with a great work ethic and attitude, and also guys who are intelligent off the court, and sometimes get blinded by this stuff rather than looking at what they can do on the court
Obviously you don’t want guys that are going to be locker room issues, or guys who don’t even enjoy playing basketball that much, or guys who don’t train and improve much, etc. But this stuff shouldn’t be valued as much as it is
I read a story somewhere about Phoenix passing on kawhi because he was sweating during the interview, and coupled with his relaxed attitude they took it as a sign that he was a player who folded under pressure lol. Missing on a generational talent cuz of some weird psych shit
Teams are always drawn to the bamba/Sexton/Jaylen/little/Scottie Lewis types who are highly intelligent, high character guys. And for whatever reason sometimes this tends to outweigh what they can do on the court
Drafting based on work ethic is silly. Most players who get drafted are incredibly hard workers in the gym, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to improve to superstar level
Admiral schofield isn’t gonna develop steph curry touch or draymond a defensive acumen no matter how many hours he puts in at the gym
I don’t really put stock in the concept that “we’ll draft this guy who has a few strengths and is a gym rat and assume he’ll figure out his problems through dedication and hard work”
