Carrier commander's letter was sent outside the chain of command at the same time the @USNavy was "fully responding," says @SECNAV.
Capt. Brett Crozier "undermined the chain of command" and "I lost confidence in his ability to lead that warship," says @SECNAV announcing decision to remove the USS Theodore Roosevelt's commander.
Decision to remove the carrier commander is not being done out of retribution, says @SECNAV.
USS Theodore Roosevelt's commander "was absolutely correct in raising" his concerns, but "it was the way in which he did it," explains @SECNAV.
"He did not take care to ensure that it couldn't be leaked," says @SECNAV.
The commander's letter "created a little bit of panic on the ship" and misrepresented the facts about what was happening on the aircraft carrier, says @SECNAV. "It raised alarm bells unnecessarily."
Copying so many people on the letter demonstrated "extremely poor judgment" in the midst of a crisis, says @SECNAV.
