Ok, Finland.

I've been going on about this, but here it is in a thread.
It should be in Finnish, but you're getting it in English.

Why "make the unemployed go work on farms" is a problem.

1. There's a reason we are dependent on imported transient farm labour. WAGES.
2. So, the official wage standard for farm labour starts at about 9€ per hour. When a job advert says they pay TES, this is what they are referring to.
3. Next, farms tend to be located where there are not a lot of people. That means you either have to travel long distances to get to your 9€ an hour job, or you have to live at your work place.

This is not possible for many people. People have obligations, they have lives.
4. So, what if you don't have obligations & can move to the farm? Great!

Do they have a place for you to live?

What kind of place?

Now is not the time to live in barracks or shared accommodation, especially if you might have risk factors (e.g. asthma, diabetes).
5. Ok, so the farm has a place for you to live.
You are going to make 9€ an hour.

How much is the farm charging you for rent?
What are you doing with your current accommodation- subletting, paying double rent, or what?
6. Ok, You figured out the accommodation, somehow.

What's happening with:

a) limit on how much you can earn while a student?
b) your income-based unemployment?
c) your KELA paperwork that has now ground to a standstill due to you actually doing something?
7. You'll probably be learning new skills. That's great!

I'm sorry, though, but you probably won't have enough money to go for a massage when your back is killing you.

You might have to buy your own gear, too- like footwear & rain clothes.
I am passionate about food & farming.
I've done the hard work & long hours at low pay.
It can be great.

The only people who think it's just a matter of shuffling people around either don't know what they are talking about or have no respect for farm workers & people generally.
Addendum:

People who come as seasonal farm workers come because they have thought these things through.

They pay is worthwhile for them due to lower cost of living in their home country.

They have made space in their lives for the trip & solved the rent-obligations-etc issues.
These people WANT to work on the farm, & they often have the skills, experience, & attitude to do the work well.

Farmers do not want people without motivation or suitable disposition.

They cannot supervise every person. It's not just a waste of time but a waste of product.
Everyone deserves a living wage.

Nobody is actually entitled to strawberries subsidized by someone else's underpaid labour.
