I figured we wouldn’t be going back this year, but that doesn’t make it any easier for my students and their families, my colleagues, and everyone that works for and with schools in Indiana.
My students reading this: I know this is hard and it’s likely upsetting. It’s ok to be upset right now. I hope y’all get to be somewhere that is safe, and that you can safely express how you feel.
Hopefully this time creates conversations and solutions about inequities in our schools. There are kids and families who don’t have the means to do e-learning and some don’t have steady meals.
There are a lot of things that needed to be addressed before all this started, more than I can list here. And all of those things are on display now. There’s a lot of work to do between now and whenever we go back to in-person school days.
If you’re wondering how you can help, a simple way to help is by being an informed voter in local, state, and federal elections. Elected officials make a lot of decisions that affect schools. Some of our issues are due to bad policy, created by elected officials.
Now is the time to start asking your elected officials what they plan to support and do, with regards to all this. And if you haven’t heard from them during this, that tells you something too.
