Doseone and Antonionian come together for the most transcendental listening experience I’ve had all year. Mashing glitchy absurdity with boisterous beats, the duo manages to get you out of your seat. But once on your feet, you can’t decide whether to dance or inspect the layers.
#3: Andy Shauf - The Neon Skyline (Singer-Songwriter / Chamber Pop)
Making worthwhile, pretty, captivating singer-songwriter pop is hard enough on its own, but making a concept album within the genre is a whole other level. Shauf does this with ease and manages to drag you into this philosophical, sad-yet-hopeful world of love and friendship.
#2: Vengeful Spectre (殞煞) - Self-Titled (Chinese Black Metal)
This record’s Chinese folk elements make it stand out in a crowd of substandard black metal, and the group perfectly gets its concept across sonically, so you don’t need to speak Chinese to follow. Pummeling drums, stormy guitar work and lush interludes—what more could you want?
