I don’t know who needs to hear this but... MCPS is the largest school district in MD & 14th largest in the country. 33% of our kids receive FARMS- that is only the % of families who report need... ever FARMS is 42.3% & many more families don’t apply even if they qualify (1/7)
Comparing the MCPS response with neighboring counties & private schools is, frankly, laughable. Making sure that vulnerable children and their families are fed, healthy, & safe is obviously gonna be prioritized over “rigor” during a worldwide crisis. (2/7)
Some of you need to experience a kid you love crying over the phone & be able to do virtually nothing to comfort them. You need to see teachers sitting with their own kids in their laps as they check in with their students bc they are family, too (3/7)
You need to get messages from kids saying they are praying for YOUR health & safety when you know that their situation has been more unstable and dangerous than you have ever experienced for even one day of your entire life. (4/7)
There are families in our communities who are not doing ok. Kids are home alone without support networks they may have relied on. People are stuck in houses possibly with abusers, no food, no internet, & many with no language to express their needs (5/7)
If this isn’t a wake up call for people about what is actually important then nothing ever will be. Enough is enough. Hold your kids, take a deep breath, & slow your life down. (6/7)
Funnel some of the energy you have for indignation into doing something productive to help people who actually need it... and let MCPS staff do the jobs they are trained for. (7/7)
