Berberine is one of the most powerful over the counter supplements on the market

Thread
Berberine is used usually for blood sugar and metabolism

An impressive study in 2008 on newly diagnosed type 2 diabetics found

Over three months berberine was as powerful as Metformin, lowering A1C by a whole point(!)

only side effects were gastrointestinal and were transient
Berberine is much better than Metformin though

Metformin shuts off production of glucose at the liver(simplified)

Berberine enhances glucose absorption at the cell, like insulin

If you took metformin before working out, you’d feel sluggish

berberine would increase performance
Berberine is also used for diarrhea, gastroenteritis, constipation, and SIBO

Berberine is actually an antibiotic, and a decently powerful one

Researchers tested Berberine against rifaximin

Berberine was just as effective as the antibiotic as well as having fewer side effects
However because of its antibiotic action, it can cause the same gut issues that it solves

This means it can stress a bad liver

Everyone is different and this is where experimentation is needed
Berberine belongs to a group of chemicals that increase expression of something called AMPK

AMPK is a very interesting enzymes

as we get older, our levels of AMPK go down

There is a lot of conjecture that raising AMPK could be the key to prolonging life span
Some of the things you have heard of increasing lifespan actually increase AMPK

calorie restriction
green tea
intense exercise
metformin
low dose aspirin

All increase AMPK
AMPK, when activated,will

burn fat
increase metabolism
lower inflammation
improve insulin sensitivity
improve hormone production
increase athltc performance

There are AMPK activators on the current banned substances list of theOlympics because of their performance enhancement
Another study showed Berberine potentially inhibits fat storage.

They took metabolic syndrome patients and put them on berberine for 3 months

Over three months their average BMI dropped 4 clicks from 31.5 to 27.5

pretty dang amazing actually
Berberine acts as an MAO inhibitor.

When you inhibit MAO

you prevent the breakdown of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine

What this means is berberine works like an old antidepressant
In a mouse study

Berberine raised levels of norepinephrine by 29%, serotonin by 19%, and dopamine by 52% after 15 days.

This effect was prevented by taking the amino acid L-Arginine (strange?).
Lastly

Another really cool effect of Berberine is it down regulates something called PDE5

I won’t get into the details here

but downregulating PDE5 will lower estradiol in men and might permanently increase blood flow to the penis

So there’s that
If you want to try berberine

the dosage is 1500 milligrams per day split into three doses

It is important to take berberine with carbs because of its blood sugar lowering effect

I would trial it on just 500mg once per day with biggest meal personally

Be safe experimenting
