A lot of people seem to be having trouble with twitter, and in general a lot of people just consider it fundamentally a hellsite. As someone who prefers it as their main social media, let me offer a thread of advice how how to actually enjoy using it:
Twitter started out as a way to text multiple people at once without having to send individual texts. As smartphones became more of a thing and text messaging apps gained functions like group chats, twitter became what i like to call an "anti-chat room"
you could put something out there, your friends could read it and reply, but you were never interrupting someone else& #39;s conversation. Tweets can just kind of live side by side. Discord still gives me anxiety over the fear of talking over or interrupting, twitter doesn& #39;t for me
which brings me to 1) don& #39;t tweet and expect engagement. Put things out there just because you want to, release them into the void. If that thing really needs the attention of someone? Maybe you should be talking to them directly
2) replies are like texting, even if the tweet is public space replying is imposing on their private mental space. Really consider your relationship to that person. Is it information you need? Is it information they need? Are you using familiarity you don& #39;t actually have?
3) rarely if ever reply to people you don& #39;t follow and who don& #39;t follow you. If you& #39;re not following them, why are you tweeting at them? How did you even come across their tweet? Would you even follow them to begin with? Remember they are a stranger to you
4) when tweeting/replying to a person you follow who doesn& #39;t follow back, consider why. Especially with people who have large followings. Telling an artist you like their work: good. Trying to be casually familiar with a parasocial relationship: bad.
5) UNTAG PEOPLE WHEN REPLYING. Did your friend retweet something? Untag the original poster or the retweeter depending on WHO you& #39;re actually talking to. Is this thread have 8 people tagged in and you& #39;re addressing one of them? UNTAG THE REST. PLEASE
you can untag on most platforms by clicking that greyed text "replying to @/______" line. I hate getting a million notifications because two people got in a fight in my mentions. I have been guilty of doing it, too, and it sucks! Please learn to untag people!!
