"We need more space, not less space, for outdoor activities. Being outdoors has a wide variety of physical and mental benefit for humans." Our Rebalancing Streets for People webinar is live now!
People can't, and won't stay inside forever. We need to plan ahead for how to get people outdoors while still maintaining social distancing.
Traffic volumes are down at least 40% across the country, but speeding and bike crashes are up. Infrastructure is inadequate to accommodate this many people biking and walking. Streets are being naturally taken over by people.
Look for opportunities to repurpose parking lanes where retail is closed, or where 4-lane roads can be reduced to 2-lane roads. Assess your inventory of cones, barrels, flexposts, etc.
On lower-volume streets, reduce to local traffic only with minimal cones and signage. Particularly helpful when sidewalks are narrow.
Depending on context, move on-street parking to existing lots and garages to make more space for walking.
Consider inequities. Some neighborhoods might have less access to yards or parks. Ensure active transportation routes are accessible in all areas.
This too shall pass, but we don't know when. Understanding what works and making adjustments so if and when we have to do this again, we have a plan in place.
