1. A commitment to 100,000 tests a day by the end of the month is welcome but of course it’s not the 250,000 Boris Johnson promised.

We look forward to seeing the details of how this commitment will be delivered especially for NHS and care staff which is now an urgent priority.
2. We’ve called for a National Testing Strategy as it’s taken us weeks to get to just over 10,000 tests today.

We now need the details of what proportion of the 100,000 promised tests will be the PCR tests or antibody test which confirming whether someone has had the virus.
3. As part of a National Testing Strategy we’ve been calling for all available labs across universities and industry to be used as part of the national effort to scale up vital testing. We need a wholesale effort to get every test possible.
4. Public health experts have repeatedly called for reintroduction of community testing & contact tracing end cycles of lockdown. There wasn’t clarity today as to whether that is a government aim. If not the aim ministers need to explain what the ‘exit strategy’ is.
5. If govt really want to scale up testing we need a clear & effective route into government & PHE’s testing community for suppliers. There has been too much confusion over what chemicals/reagents are needed/available. We need a ‘Testing Minister’ to grip supplies & procurement.
6. There was a welcome recognition of importance of surveillance today. Think that’s first time we’ve heard a minister talk about it. We need weekly national surveys to give a reasonable estimate of current and past infection. This data should be published.
7. Ministers are very focused on the antibody test. As well as needing to know how many are likely to be available we also need to know how government will segment groups of people to test and in what order.
