Twelve Premier League clubs are owned by billionaires. Leave the workers alone. https://twitter.com/jack_blanchard_/status/1245763029377134592
When all this is over and a public inquiry looks at how people “played their part”, I’m pretty sure that “Premier League footballers” who sat on their arses and collected their wages will be national heroes relative to “Matt Hancock”.
This whole bullshit is part of a narrative demonising young, mainly working-class and often of colour men, implying that they don't deserve and haven't earned their money. It's prejudice. Don't be prejudiced.
We see it a lot – idiots criticising cars, houses, clothes, whatever. But for @MattHancock, one of those responsible for this tragedy, to accuse footballers of treachery – using them to make political capital and misdirect from his own callous negligence – is frankly revolting.
Amazing this needs saying, but it's a footballer's job to play football and pay tax. It's a goverment's job to look after the economy, the NHS, and resolve a pandemic for whose spread it is partially responsible.
If the Tories decide to tax the rich more heavily, then anyone sensible will get behind that. But "Premier League footballers" are not a special class of taxpayer, and to suggest that they are reflects a heady mix of bigotry and idiocy.
