Today the D.C. Council is doing a Zoom test-run for its legislative session next Tuesday, which will happen virtually — a first in the legislature's history. @RobertWhite_DC has his two young daughters with him. "Madison, please sit down," he says. "I'm working."
The Council members are having a fake debate over a contract so they can figure out how and when each will speak. The Council secretary is playing God, so to speak, with the power to mute and unmute individual members.
Some snap judgements so far. Best background art? Tie between @brandonttodd and @RobertWhite_DC. Honorable mention for @charlesallen. Most work needed on placement? @kenyanmcduffie. His room is back-lit!
Most committed spouse? @BrianneKNadeau, because we can see a wedding picture in the background. Cute. Most likely to maybe violating some D.C. campaign law? @cmdgrosso, only because you can see an old campaign sign in the back. But, he's not running again, so probably OK.
Biggest question: is @ChmnMendelson at the office, or did he take the D.C. and U.S. flags and that big blue curtain home for background use?
"Must I appear physically?" asks McDuffie, inquiring if he can just call in, or if he has to be on video. "We want to see you," responds @marycheh. "You look great."
The Council's general counsel says that lawmakers have to appear by video, and the public will be able to watch the virtual session, but not participate. Sorry, @tomsherwood.
