You might have seen in my twitter bio a blurb saying “I’m writing a book about #dyspraxia.
#dyspraxia is a disability that affects my sense of space and time. It also makes fine motor skills activities like riding a bike and catching a ball a challenge.
I was diagnosed at the age of 4, back when Mike Harris was the premier of Ontario. It was also the first decade where it was taken seriously in the medical community.
Because of Dyspraxia, I’ve had an unconventional career path & faced stigma that followed me up until my adult life & is still a source of anxiety.
But the hardest part was learning how to advocate for myself, and tell other people about a disability with limited awareness despite the fact it affects 10 to 15% of the global population.
After I graduated college, I felt too much pressure to conform & blend in. Because I really believed it was the key to my survival.
Thanks to people/ places like the @thegoodtrade, @AudreyCFarley, @csiTO, @Col_Comm, @DOPEamineSHOW, and of course my loving family I gained the courage to break the silence, and finally tell that important part of my story.
With this book, I hope to be a resource & source of comfort for people with #dyspraxia & those that want to be a kinder, more supportive and understanding “ally” for people who live with this disability.
@Col_Comm has been working with me closely on mentoring me through this book. Their latest challenge is a good one: one chapter a week. Completed on a Friday starting immediately. The goal is 15 chapters in total.
However, due to the #COVID19Pandemic, there’s no guarantee that I can get this published soon after I hit the 15 chapter mark.
But that isn’t stopping me from keeping it going.
I hope to be a source of comfort for those that assume good job opportunities, healthy relationships, a good exercise routine, and a decent education are off limits to those with #dyspraxia. Spoiler alert: all these things are achievable.
