As an update to our February 2020 report, PGP has released one-pagers on the Virginia’s reform amendment’s (SJ18) minority protections, commission process, and transparency requirements: http://gerrymander.princeton.edu/VirginiaReport2020/ (1/4)
The first clarifies that SJ18 protects minority communities, on its own, through standalone VRA language. The latter two discuss how the enabling legislation (SB203/HB758) would have built upon SJ18’s process and transparency and offer further improvements. (2/4)
Although SB203/HB758 are off the table, the Gov can amend the criteria bill (SB717/HB1255) to add in key missing pieces from SB203/HB758. The amended version of the criteria bill, with the added provisions, would then go to the GA's veto session for an up-or-down vote. (3/4)
