Why blaming the South for all of the nations issues is reductive, discriminatory, and classist. A thread. https://twitter.com/mikiebarb/status/1245698394724720640
The South is disproportionately impoverished to the rest of the nation, meaning it’s much easier for a New Yorker to stay home from work than it is for a Louisianian. https://www.povertyusa.org/data/2018
Additionally it’s much easier for the rest of the nation to stay entertained and work from home with their Zoom, Netflix and video games than it is for those in the south where large swaths of the population have no internet access.
I’ve already shared this map, which shows food deserts in the US. But let’s take it a step further.
Even if you had a grocery store within a mile of your home, many in the south have issues with food insecurity, making it hard for southerners to buy in bulk and avoid the grocery store for weeks. Many of our citizens go day by day.
Now you might say all you’re doing is proving my point that the South sucks. Well let’s take a look at why:
Last but not least let’s take a look at who these southerners are working for. Where are all the corporate offices? Oh right.
So the next time you want to fire off in a tweet about how the south is to blame for COVID-19 or any of your other issues, maybe knock on your upstate NY neighbor’s door and ask why he isn’t paying his southern working class employees.
Alright that’s all.

My final thoughts: that NY times article was trash. Pls do better.

I love Louisiana. I love John Bel Edwards. And I’ll spend my life fighting for this place.

thank you and goodnight.
