[THREAD] How I travelled to Laos in Southeast Asia, at the last minute, without any pre-booked accommodation

The initial plan was to backpack Sri Lanka

at the airport, I was denied boarding @Emirates coz my connecting flight wouldn't happen coz @JetAirways had just been grounded

I wasn't about to go back home & the next cheapest flight was to Bangkok

I got to Bangkok & took an overnight bus to Vientiane, Laos

I'd heard loads about Laos on previous trips to Southeast Asia, so I had an idea of what I wanted to see and do.

In classic backpacker style, I spontaneously freestyled = no bookings

Vientiane is the capital city and my main interests were in central and northern Laos .

So I got local money [felt good to be millionaire again], some food and jumped on a minibus van headed far north, to my first official destination

Luang Prabang, Laos

I checked into Sunrise Riverside Backpackers Hostel, which is near the infamous Utopia Bar

The hostel is lively and has a great social atmosphere. All the people I eventually travelled Laos with, I met at this hostel

Kuang Si Falls

This is the main attraction in Luang Prabang. It's a large cascade of turquoise blue waterfalls, with tiered limestone pools

After a few days here we took a minibus van to more adventurous lands in central Laos

Vang Vieng, Laos

I checked into what I think is Laos' best hostel: Nana Backpackers Hostel

It cost R90per night and you get free whiskey shots every night, they have regular pool parties; it's a hella jump

WHAT TO DO INVANG VIENG

You could easily spend a week here, there's so much to do:
• Go tubing down a river
• Swim in the lagoons
• Rent a buggy
• Go to the Jungle Party
• Sightseeing
• So much more!

[WATCH] Tubing

It’s an insane day drinking experience; you get on a Tuk Tuk, grab a tube and float down the Nam Song River, stopping at bars along the way; drinking potent local whiskey and dodgy cocktails. Sounds fun right? Well it was.
