Children's book authors make less than any other (royalties are a percentage of the cover price, children's books sell for far less than adult books and the author's percentage is much lower). Many writers survive by being paid to do keynotes and school visits. Now they can't.
Just FYI, authors have just had months of events canceled, and for many, that means they lost months of income. There's no bailout for self-employed artists and writers. A lot are hurting.
And yet all I see from the kid lit community is "stay home, protect each other, support these charities, and hey, let's do lots of free videos and engagement to help kids and parents right now." They're simply the best people.
And then to see, on top of all that, so many getting absolutely harassed by pro-piracy people who think authors should give away their work for free and that their hundreds of hours of labor should have no value? Breaks my heart. Just, value art. Value intellectual labor.
