Michigan @GovWhitmer at press conference says the state is "still a good month" away from reaching the peak in coronavirus cases.
"We are in for a tough four, five, six weeks," Whitmer said. Translation: Stay-at-home orders aren't going to be lifted anytime soon.
"It will be too dangerous for our kids to be congregating at schools, and that’s true for the foreseeable future,” Whitmer said. She also said it's too early to start scheduling when school starts in the fall.
"We have not discussed a statewide curfew" yet, Whitmer said, adding she's worried about the "exponential growth" of COVID-19. More testing needed before "making educated decisions."
Whitmer said the additional testing in Detroit “shows a much higher prevalence of COVID-19 that anyone anticipated.” The city's confirmed infections continue to rise with more testing. So far, nearly 2,500 Detroiters tested positive, and 82 have died in the city.
Earlier in press conference, Whitmer said of the 337 coronavirus-related deaths: "Each of those people was a Michigander with a story, with a family and friends who can’t mourn them as would traditionally would because we can't congregate. It's important we remember this."
Whitmer says the peak of the coronavirus cases won't happen until late April or early May. "That means we are a month out before we hit the height of this." Translation: Thousands more will die if the fatality rate continues its exponential increase.
