One thing I have done since becoming a prof--esp. since starting at my school--is to be openly vulnerable to my students. I tell them some things that went wrong when I was a student and how they affected my work. I tell them I will listen to them and work with them.
They are hesitant at first but a lot of them do open up to me eventually. Other than the EMT, the experiences described in this thread are actually...relatively normal.

If you listen to your students and give them flexibility, most of them bust their butts to make up work later.
More flexibility is *definitely* needed in these trying times. But even when we go back to "regular" teaching, please. Listen. Treat your students like humans.
