In a panic, many orgs are running to Google and searching things like "how to build remote team culture". I get it. I've done it, too. I want you all to know that people weren't functioning in survival mode when those pieces were written. They won't work now.
You will likely need to adjust your practices and strategies on a weekly/bi-weekly basis to make room for shifts. Your team members are traumatized, suffering from anxiety, at home with children, exhausted and scared. Now is not the time for most things.
Your team members (even more than before) are now the only source of income for multiple people AND/OR waiting for the other shoe to drop and someone in the house to lose a job. Take moments of pause.
Some ideas that I'm preparing to pitch to my team:
> Weekly no meeting days. People need a chance to DO work.
> Auditing Slack channels. There are too many. AND they are triggering.
> Moving from workstream based work to project-based work, where possible, over the next 3 mos.
If you have the power to shift policies on your team to accommodate parents, caregivers, single-income households, DO. IT. My whole team has the day off on Friday. Because we all need it. We're exhausted and it shows.
This is not a long snow day, we are in a PANDEMIC. Practice empathy at every single turn. Love yall.
