Last night at bedtime I read my 6 year old a little bit of "They Knew Lincoln" ( @OUPHistory), a 1940s folk history of African Americans & Abraham Lincoln. She asked who wrote it, so I told her about John E. Washington and then said this new edition was edited by @katemasur
We read part of the chapter about William Johnson, whom Washington calls "Lincoln& #39;s First Bodyguard" because Johnson traveled with Lincoln on his way to the inauguration in 1861. Charlotte said, "Was Kate there?" I said, no, @katemasur was not alive then.
Then I realized that Charlotte was referring to this wonderful #HistoryBooks4Kids: "How Kate Warne Saved President Lincoln" ( @AlbertWhitman), which tells the story of a young woman who joined the Pinkertons and helped protect Lincoln in 1861.
Highly recommended.
