Last night at bedtime I read my 6 year old a little bit of "They Knew Lincoln" ( @OUPHistory), a 1940s folk history of African Americans & Abraham Lincoln. She asked who wrote it, so I told her about John E. Washington and then said this new edition was edited by @katemasur
We read part of the chapter about William Johnson, whom Washington calls "Lincoln's First Bodyguard" because Johnson traveled with Lincoln on his way to the inauguration in 1861. Charlotte said, "Was Kate there?" I said, no, @katemasur was not alive then.
Then I realized that Charlotte was referring to this wonderful #HistoryBooks4Kids: "How Kate Warne Saved President Lincoln" ( @AlbertWhitman), which tells the story of a young woman who joined the Pinkertons and helped protect Lincoln in 1861.

Highly recommended.
