Watching so many teachers go through the struggle of “but if I can’t grade it how will I make them do it/learn it?” Folks it can be done. Students want to learn. If the grade is the only thing making them do the work reconsider if the work is worthwhile.
Don’t dehumanize your students by treating them like they have to be forced into learning when curiosity and desire to learn is a natural part of being human!
And realize that our experience of forcing them to learn is a product of the role we’ve forced them into with traditional schooling, not an inherent trait.
AND even when students navigate this system successfully and get good grades, don’t fool yourself into thinking work that’s completed to check a box and get a grade is that meaningful to them or they’re getting much out of it.
