If you are a leftist who dreams of eliminating the system of rents you must describe a transition to a less exploitative system that realistically values the WORK of small individual property developers. Every time you say there is no work you increase the resistance to the idea.
The "small landlord" whining online aren't making it up when they say it's hard to turn a profit. The landlording system is designed to benefit big property holders. Like small business owners "the market" makes monopolies.

Why not offer a better vision of a rent free world.
What important work do small land lords do?
-renovate unlivable properties
-perform maintenance for tenants
-advertise and connect tenants with suitable homes
-serve as a stabilizing force in local community affairs.

You know who else does all of that? The super of a coop.
But, right now, even if you wanted to creating coops is hard legally. We could have more legal and tax frameworks to support such housing plans, but we don't... because rent is such a huge racket. Especially for the big players.
But if there were a way to convert a set of properties in to a coop easily, where the people living there have at least 51% of the decision making power, and "small land lords" were more like supers it could benefit everyone.
Instead most on the left are devoted to making small business owners & landlords hate us. Even though these people are also being screwed over by capitalism.

And I'm convinced that's why small businesses and small landlords are allowed to persist. They are a political shield.
