[CW: corona, covid, the plague, yada yada]
This piece makes decent points - and might help you understand the Swedish approach - but it’s also so very, very ripe with issues. https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/no-lockdown-please-w-re-swedish
For one, praising how reasonable Swedes are being when saying you went out with friends.
Well.
But mostly I latch onto “I couldn’t imagine totalitarianism in the West”. HOW FAR UP YOUR OWN ASS ARE YOU.
Congrats, you just displayed glaring ignorance of the French constitution, the ancient rise of the far-right in Belgium, Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands and oh SWEDEN TOO, the plight of racialized people, EU border policing, the treatment of Greece, need I go on.
I love Sweden in many ways, but the seeds of totalitarianism are unquestionably here. They’ve always been, because this is a society very much in love with compliance.
If you’ve never seen that as bad, well. You’re probably complied your whole life.
You’ve*
As for the good points. Yes, full lockdowns are unsustainable. Regardless of economical impact, we’re already seeing people going batshit insane and domestic violence going up.
The Swedish strategy is to delay that stage as long as possible.
Is it the right one? Who the heck knows. There are conflicting papers, conflicting theories. Everyone is running live experiments and it’s terrifying.
There are decent cases to be made in both directions and I don’t envy decision-makers.
