Say hello to @ameyann from PROTO! She’ll tell you what #PROTOcall is, what our topic is, and who our host and panelists are. #CoveringCovid
31% rise in cases in India over the day. More hotspots, more clusters - means more reporters will be at the frontlines of the pandemic meeting doctors, police, etc.
We are joined by @thejaram92, Karnataka bureau chief of @thenewsminute. #PROTOcall #CoveringCovid
@nayantaran asks @thejaram92: You have reported from different areas in Bangalore, spoken to people living in slums, street workers, people feeding stray dogs. What precautions do you take? #PROTOcall #CoveringCovid
Theja Ram : My fears - what if I bump into an affected person. But I also realised that while moving, its possible not to come in physical contact with another person.
Fear : When I go to hospital, or anybody sneezes I hope today is not the day. It is comforting when the editor says avoid stepping out. But all reporters may not have such editors.
Guilt : Am I putting my family at risk because of the job?
@nayantaran to @thejaram92: The city is in lockdown, there are not many people on the streets. This can be problematic for a woman reporter beyond what we normally face when we go out. #PROTOcall #CoveringCovid
I try to keep the 8 pm deadline, if it’s possible. If not, I keep my family and colleagues posted about my latest location.
@nayantaran to @netshrink: This is an extraordinary situation because it is a crisis but, unlike a flood or earthquake, we don't know when it is going to end. So for the foreseeable future reporters are going to have to keep track of people falling sick and people dying.
The main mode of transmission of #COVID-19 is droplet transmission - cough and sneezing.
