No it isn't.

For every crime committed by someone in jail there are ten more committed by people you interact with regularly and just consider people.

People just like to think they are inherently better than the people policed into prison. https://twitter.com/seguntheprogram/status/1245596714389475329
You do not have to condone rape or murder in order to recognize the plain fact that we do walk and live among murderers and rapists that we interact with in perfectly friendly fashion because if you don't know what someone has done, you just treat them like a human.
Likelihood is that you know someone who has taken a life for one reason or another.

The MeToo movement has shown that you DEFINITELY know someone guilty of sexual assault just by sheer numbers

Don't even get into assault and battery. Know someone who has been in a fight?
The point is not "murder is fine"

It's that the idea that prisons separate "citizens" from "criminals" and that there couldn't be another approach beside prison because we couldn't live alongside criminals is just simply not true.

Prison is simply for the fraction we catch.
This is not to mention that most murders aren't committed by people who have killed before.

Most murderers only kill one person ever.

Which is why putting murderers in jail doesn't reduce murders. Murders are statistically committed by newbies to murder.
The fact we don't want to confront is that there's no "murderer type"

There's not some unique trait murderers have.

There's no unifying thread but the action.

Anyone can kill given the right circumstances.

And THAT'S what scares us.
In the same way that most rape is committed by people the victims know and trust and love.

But we cling to the idea of evil figures waiting in shadowy alleys because it feels better if people who do terrible things are just a different category
Prisons don't make people safer.

We just got to the idea of tossing people in a hole first and decided there was no need to think of better solutions anymore.

Prison makes us FEEL safer and that's all we really care about.
So we have a society in which any unwanted behavior in society deserves the same punishment -- Dehumanization, social deprivation, isolation, claustrophobia, physical violence, removal of all rights and human compassion.

Murder
Rape
Assault
Theft
Drug use
Vandalism
