Something cool came out of the virtual teaching experience for me this week. I decided to create a set of tasks that students had the flexibility to complete in their own time-no Zoom seminar, no Teams meeting-just a handful of 'do when you can' exercises.
They have a 5-day extn on all assignments and tasks due to the upheaval, so no obligation to complete any work until next week. But they've already started to respond and it warms my heart to see that they're engaging. One of the tasks is a simple 'discussion board' exercise.
The other one is a 'crowd curation' activity - I asked them to imagine that they're working in a heritage space and curating an exhibition of artworks from the C18 that aims to tell more complete and inclusive histories about their subjects - focusing in particular on PoC.
(for context, we were studying Amma Asante's Belle and the portrait of Dido Belle/Elizabeth Lindsay now attributed to David Martin). They have had to use their own initiative to do this, and also do some research. I'd like to share with you some of the important figures from...
the C18 that they've picked out (and I'll update this thread as they come in). One of the figures they chose was Joseph de Boulogne, the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, born of an enslaved woman named Anne Nanon and George de Boulogne on the island of Guadeloupe.
