Something cool came out of the virtual teaching experience for me this week. I decided to create a set of tasks that students had the flexibility to complete in their own time-no Zoom seminar, no Teams meeting-just a handful of & #39;do when you can& #39; exercises.
They have a 5-day extn on all assignments and tasks due to the upheaval, so no obligation to complete any work until next week. But they& #39;ve already started to respond and it warms my heart to see that they& #39;re engaging. One of the tasks is a simple & #39;discussion board& #39; exercise.
The other one is a & #39;crowd curation& #39; activity - I asked them to imagine that they& #39;re working in a heritage space and curating an exhibition of artworks from the C18 that aims to tell more complete and inclusive histories about their subjects - focusing in particular on PoC.
(for context, we were studying Amma Asante& #39;s Belle and the portrait of Dido Belle/Elizabeth Lindsay now attributed to David Martin). They have had to use their own initiative to do this, and also do some research. I& #39;d like to share with you some of the important figures from...
the C18 that they& #39;ve picked out (and I& #39;ll update this thread as they come in). One of the figures they chose was Joseph de Boulogne, the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, born of an enslaved woman named Anne Nanon and George de Boulogne on the island of Guadeloupe.
