I'm Bronagh McAtasney, the "elder" of the cohort 😁 It's my turn to run the account today. Rather than giving you a blow-by-blow rundown of just how much Netflix I've watched, I thought I'd go over 3 PH projects I've worked on. And it's #archives30 month - my favourite month!
The pic above was taken the Ballydugan Cottage @FolkTransport, where I've just completed my internship working on the #UnlockingOurSoundHeritage project - see more here https://www.nmni.com/get-involved/UOSH.aspx and @BLSoundHeritage
The @FolkTransport has thousands of recordings with about 5k at immediate risk of being lost. It's not so much because of the recordings but more the equipment as it becomes obsolete.
And each recording had to be digitised, listened to and catalogued. That's a lot of work!
My role as an intern was to listen and catalogue. What a joy! Everything from fishermen to mill girls, the Orange Order to ghost stories. An amazing array of voices.
And that's the wonderful thing about this project. On a personal level, to hear the voices of loved ones gone but also to have a direct link to the loves and stories of our past.
All collected by so many amazing oral historians including Anthony Buckley, who also taught @QUBelfast, Michael McCaughan, Linda Ballard and @valeriewilson57 among many others. We have them to thank for this collection.
You'll be able to listen to all the recordings as they are uploaded at https://sounds.bl.uk
Another thread in a while. Time for coffee and reading. Our current module is Unruly Women. That's my kind of woman!
I'm just going to add to this thread with an example of how #UOSH is working in the community.
Using recordings from the archive, a group in Newtownards are thinking about their own memories and designing stained glass windows that will hopefully be displayed in time.
