As a board game lover I was sorry to hear that Monopoly is the #1 selling game at the moment because IT’S SO BORING. There are actually really great board games out there that are actually fun. So here are a few family favourites. #games #Coronavirus
The current favourite is Catan (aka Settlers of Catan). We’ve had this once since Xmas and everyone in the house enjoys this one (13,15,+adults). The game is really well designed and it seems that every time we play it ends up with a very close and exciting ending. Great fun.
Cluedo is also a popular one ... a classic.
Another favourite is Lords of Waterdeep. We got this one a few years ago and this opened my eyes to how much fun a more complex board game can be. I’d say good for 10/11 yrs and up. There’s lots of strategy and activity and we all loved it. Super.
King of Tokyo is a cards and dice game that is great fun. 10yrs+ perhaps. Very quick game that can be played anywhere.
Carcassonne is another great one. Very simple ... just placing tiles on the table to build cities and roads, but very well-designed and it is a quick, fun game. This became a favourite very quickly.
I love the 2-player game Abalone ... maybe because I spent a summer playing it when I was an au pair, but it’s still great. Very simple rules & layout, but potentially very sophisticated.
For younger children I think Labyrinth is great. Fun, colourful game that the parents can also enjoy.
Dixit is a fun game that anyone can play ... lots of imagination and joking involved.
Pass the Pigs is a simple, and surprisingly fun game for 6+
Waldschattenspiel (Shadows in the woods game) is sooo much fun, especially with smallies. It needs to be dark to play it though (it depends on the shadows cast by a tea light candle) so we usually play in winter.
“Tell me a story” is a beautifully simple game for imagination and story-telling. It is a set of gorgeous cards from which you select a few to make up your own story. Good for almost all ages 3yrs+
