This lock-down's strongly suggesting a way of life is possible post-pandemic that could involve a heap less business travel & commuting. Local economies would flourish, carbon emissions would tumble, and those who need to travel would find trains, buses, roads, airports less busy
The solution to gridlock was always going to be less journeys. Now everyone knows how. The genie is out of the bottle. When your boss says "time to come back to the office", say no. For millions of us, there's really no need.
What would happen to city centres, you may ask? I think people would start to live in them again. All that real estate, for people who are only there during office hours.
This could also be the answer to the housing crisis. If your home is where you live *and* work, suddenly we don't need duplication of space. Businesses could scale back office space and open up a great deal of potential living space.
And finally - the piece de resistance - if millions of us are travelling less for work, any pretence of an economic justification for white elephants like HS2, an extra runway at major airports, or adding lanes to motorways evaporates, saving many £billions
The gov't could invest that money in capital projects that have a real future. Upgrading everyone's broadband would be a good start.
One more thought: when we remove the daily commute, that has potential to free up time for other things in our personal lives - hobbies, socialising, learning, creating etc. Many people would get a chunk of their lives back that's been lost to work
