Corvid-19 is making so clear to us that our current economic rules have not helped us build a society that is as strong, connected & supportive as it needs to be for this crisis and the crisis to come 1/
/ The rules work well to create wealth & locate it in the hands of some. To give us exciting new things that bling. The rules work less well to support the things that matter most. Stable warm homes for everyone to be in, good jobs that don't disappear when consumerism does.
/The rules don't recognise and value caring work - the central most fundamental activity of our collective society. They don't help us build deep collective knowledge held in public institutions & used for the common good.
/The crisis shows that they are just rules, rules that can be changed, that must change. People in government can change the economic rules, using a framework of collective values to make decisions. The values research shows people prioritise most.
/It makes sense to think long-term now the window has been thrown open. Through that window we can see what happens in crisis of the rules benefit only some people. We come together because that is what humans do, but our rules have made many things harder than they need be.
