The mask issue has gotten pretty crazy, but the basic points are not really confusing or in dispute:
1) Masks won't protect you from getting sick, but they WILL protect you from spreading to others, and they will make it much easier for you to not touch your face. They will also help destigmatize mask wearing for people who are symptomatic.
2) N95 masks and surgical masks are in desperately short supply, so leave those for the health care workers and use a scarf or homemade mask of some kind if you are just a regular person.
3) Don't allow a false sense of security to creep in. Mask or no mask, you absolutely need to continue abiding by the strictures of social distancing and hand hygiene: wash hands or use purell whenever you touch anything; stay home if you can; maintain distance 6ft or more if not
