Digging through the Cook County medical examiner's website. Theres been a noticeable increase in deaths by "pneumonia" and "acute respiratory distress" this week that arent being listed as COVID deaths
I dont know for sure but my guess is the medical examiner isnt testing for COVID during these autopsies, so if the victim never got tested while alive, the ME isnt going to list COVID as a cause of death
It'd be good to know if other jurisdictions are seeing an unusual rise in "pneumonia/acute respiratory distress" deaths and whether medical examiners can or do count COVID as a cause even if the person didn't get tested while alive
