Yesterday was my 15th anniversary of having a teaching cert. I just renewed my NBPTS cert. I& #39;ve run countless workshops about boosting student engagement. My students tend to like me. I& #39;m telling you this to provide context for the following terrible "online teaching" stats.
1/7
I teach ~140 students, ~90 AP World History and ~50 on-level US History. Since school was canceled, 89 of them have at least viewed the assignments I& #39;ve been working crazy hours to put online. (And if they can see them, they can do them.) That& #39;s 64%. I& #39;m not mad! Life& #39;s cray!
2/7
Of the 89 who have had the time and tech to at least view the assignments (allllllll kinds of assignments), only 15 have actually turned any in. At least one of these assignments was "Watch this 5 minute video and write one comment." 15 students. That& #39;s 11%.
3/7
Breaking it down even more, in the on-level (no AP exam as incentive) US History class, 26 out of ~50 have "viewed assignment," and only 3 of them have turned things in. Again, I& #39;m not mad at them! We& #39;re in the middle of a freaking pandemic!
4/7
Our students have been completely institutionalized. They work for grades. Right now, at least in our district, teachers are supposed to be teaching but not grading anything. This results in teachers feeling as though they are shouting into the void.
5/7
Teachers, if you are in a position like mine and are comparing yourself to teachers in other grade levels, schools, districts, states, etc. where students have the incentives, tech, and support to do totally voluntary schoolwork, knock it off! You& #39;re doing your best!
6/7
We need a new paradigm in public ed. I don& #39;t know what it is. For now, I just want you to take a deep breath, go stand by a window or on your porch, and think of some other ways to fill your time besides full time "online teaching." Right now, we& #39;re online tutors at best.
7/7
BTW, my numbers are this low and I’ve had nothing else to do but try to design engaging online lessons! No kids! No sick people! I’m ridiculously privileged and have access to all resources, and yet. (I was pretty depressed about it, tbh, but went on a walk and reframed.)
