Not to discount experienced workers, but historically a lot of Cdns simply haven& #39;t wanted to do this work. We& #39;re in a new reality so I& #39;ll say it....if it& #39;s not possible to bring in workers, maybe we can now somehow get Canadians to step up to the plate? https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/article-canadas-food-supply-at-risk-as-pandemic-tightens-borders-to-farm/">https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/...
There is a long overdue, difficult conversation Canada needs to have about the price of agricultural labour and what we expect to pay for food.
Some people will say, we need to pay our labourers more, but then balk at more expensive apples. Similarly, when consumers expect cheap abundant apples and high wages for farm workers, they expect reduced (but already thin) margins for farmers.
This isn& #39;t a problem that is unique to Canada. It is endemic in the United States and in the EU. We have a caste system for labour and expect cheap food.
