Funny, everyone was fine with it when only us chronically ill lazy benefit scroungers were banned from having savings https://twitter.com/mirrorpolitics/status/1245487355697471489
I need to correct my tweet. It’s not true that only sick people are banned from having savings. Other benefit claimants are too, including jobseekers who cannot claim if they have savings.
The point I needed to make is that people who were on benefits before covid19 are considered undeserving while the million people claiming now are not.
As a sick and disabled benefit claimant, if someone gave me more than £6000 I would lose benefits until I was back below that level. But also if the DWP judged that I spent it too quickly or frivolously then I would be punished and my benefits not restored.
It means if I were to somehow get money I’d need it to be enough to live on forever, because otherwise I would have to go through the years long fight to claim benefits again and there are no guarantees I’d get it.
My wife, who is my carer and not disabled, is also not allowed to have savings. If she earns or saves too much money then I will lose benefits. That’s why a lot of sick and disabled people can’t get married or even live with their partner.
