Finished the census.
My kids all insisted on being reported thus:
Ethnicity:
Mexican, Mexican American, Chicano
Race:
White (Mixed European) &
Native American (Huasteca Nahua / Chichimeca).
There was a long conversation about the last one.

My wife's family says that its indigenous roots came from those communities, so my children have accepted that as part of their racial identity (though culturally / ethnically they have little connection to present-day indigenous groups in San Luis Potosí & the Huasteca).

I, on the other hand, put "Chicano" and "White (Mixed European)."
I have no idea where my limited (8%) indigenous ancestry comes from, and I have no intention of ever claiming indigeneity as part of my personal identity.

But definitely note:
YOU CAN CHOOSE MORE THAN ONE RACE.
If you're Mexican American and you know for sure that your people are Spanish and X native group, for example, you can select them both on the Census.

Addendum.
You could select "OTHER" and write whatever you want, but note that the Native American option lists, uh, example indigenous Mexican groups (specifically "Mayan" [sic] and "Aztec"
).

Addendum 2.
To clarify, on the "race" screen, for the "Native American" box, you can list *whatever* tribe / nation / group you want.
They just happened to list examples, among them "Mayan" [sic] and "Aztec."
You could write "Purépecha" or "Otomí" or "Zapotec," etc.
