A coalition of formerly incarcerated ppl + correctional employees in #Indiana prepared a detailed plan showing how the state could release 5k people. The plan is fantastic, and contains a list of vacant hotels that the state could use for quarantine. /2

Hotels and motels have en-suite bathrooms and telephones, so people can stay connected with their loved ones and practice more effective isolation, per WHO guidelines.

Unlimited telephone access also makes reentry planning between service providers and individuals easier. /3
"Because of the nature of the crisis, we suddenly have MORE options for places people could stay, not fewer," the plan notes.

Forcing vulnerable people to stay behind bars is not the only option. It's not even the safest option. /4
