So of course my parents' fridge is malfunctioning. I call the fridge repair guy. He's in his 60s and doesn't want to put himself or my parents at risk so isn't doing any service calls for the foreseeable future. Oh no. But wait, he insists on helping me fix it. A 2020 thread. 1/
We spoke for 16 mins. He walks me through how he would diagnose the issue their fridge is having. He tells me how it is risky for me to get anyone to come to their house, who has likely gone into a lot of other houses. We talk about his new grand-baby he hasn't met yet. 2/
He mentions that they are planning to go on a walk this weekend, 8 feet apart. He has a 84yo mom who just got back from a monthlong cruise and has just ended her 14 days of quarantine. He has been dropping off groceries at her house, Lysol-ing everything including bag handles. 3/
We come back to the fridge. He asks what I've tried, what I should try, and what the model number is. I don't know it. He tells me the website to use to order the necessary part. "Don't use Amazon!" He asks if I'm comfortable with replacing electronics myself. 4/
He jumps back to the importance of social isolation and how it's important to not expose our parents. Really didn't expect to be having this talk with a 60 year old. He's been returning calls all morning walking people through their fridge/freezer issues and how to fix them. 5/
I think it's important for you to know I have never met this guy before. He came recommended on Nextdoor. I spoke to him one other time last year during a hurricane when my ice maker broke. I called him and described what was wrong. 6/
He asked me what I tried, told me I replaced the wrong part, gave me the right part to order, and told me to only call him back if that didn't work. Saved me a whole lot of money for absolutely no incentive to himself. 7/
Back to today. He's turning off his business phone because he can't keep up with all the calls. So he gives me his personal cell phone number and tells me that I can call him back anytime until 10 every single night. "If you have any trouble with anything at all, you call me." 8/
This fucking guy. I just...I thanked him over and over for the help and he just kept saying it really wasn't a problem, and made sure I wrote down his cell phone number. We ended the call on the most 2020 note ever, which is to tell each other to be safe and wash your hands. 9/9
