I went from living in a world where not many understood what public health was, what I did for a living and why it was a big deal that we’ve been historically under funded. Upstream approaches = preventing issues from occuring..ie much easier and cheaper to prevent a disease than to treat/ manage. Downstream approaches = disease has happened, now lets treat it and somehow manage..more expensive and more risk.
Public health works in the background, allowing our societies to function in a healthy and safe manner. When you hear us public health professionals screaming raising our hands advocating for strict measures it’s worth paying attention to. We may be past the containment stage
But in order to effectively mitigate this pandemic we need strict adherence to self isolation and quarantine. We need time to accurately analyze the data. In order to inform policy, help our front liners and truly plank the curve we absolutely need to do this.
@fordnation increase enforcement efforts on those not obeying quarantine. Decrease the list of essential businesses immediately. Give us the adequate time we need to do our jobs effectively and support our health systems. Information is power, how our patients respond may differ
Than those in other countries. Our prescribing patterns, admissions, societal fabrics are not equal. We accumulate data here in Canada daily, if we jump to pre-mature conclusions we may disseminate mixed messaging. Buy us time, it will help us all in the long run.
