1/ I’m normally not one for oversharing personal stuff but I feel compelled to write this thread. This week I had surgery at a specialist cancer hospital (I’m fine & back home recovering) thanks to the amazing #NHS staff who are working flat out to rush through as many procedures
2/ before the NHS gets overwhelmed or they get sick from #coronavirus Of the 3 medical teams I interacted with - surgical, post surgical & general ward -not one had been given a test, they had no PPE, they were dealing with high risk situations & were continuing to give their all
5/ for properly funded public services. That should be a right for everyone in the UK & globally. And a reminder that in the global South - countries like Mozambique have only 20 surgeons for 26 million citizens. The right to health is a fundamental human right.
6/ its up to all of us to speak out especially as NHS staff are increasingly under pressure not to speak out. https://amp.theguardian.com/society/2020/mar/31/nhs-staff-gagged-over-coronavirus-protective-equipment-shortages?__twitter_impression=true
3/ the NHS staff who were from every corner of the world, were already understaffed, all said they felt they were not being protected by the Govt. Some were concerned that anyone with Intensive care expertise would be sent off to deal with COVID leaving overwhelmed staff even
4/ stretched. All wanted tests - & blamed Govt inaction for weeks of delays & dithering. Whilst they appreciated the #clapforNHS - they would much prefer having decent pay, more staff & a properly funded NHS & a Govt that gave a shit. I know I will redouble my efforts to fight
